Today, Freedom Readers serves 20 sites with about 230 children.
Freedom Readers is our February Nonprofit of the Month sponsored by South Atlantic Bank.
The mission remains the same: help children in low-income communities improve reading skills. It’s done through one-on-one literacy training, providing free books for home libraries and creating an inspiring, high-energy learning environment.
Bailey, founder and executive director, earned her bachelor’s degree at the College of Charleston with a major in English education, a master’s degree in secondary education from Coastal Carolina University and a doctorate in education with a specialization in language and literacy from the University of South Carolina.
She recognized how books shaped her own life, providing an escape and companionship and changing her world view. She is passionate about helping children learn and helping them break the cycle of poverty through literacy.

About Nonprofit of the Month
Each month, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce announces a nonprofit of the month. This special promotion sponsored by South Atlantic Bank recognizes an outstanding nonprofit that is an investor with Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. The organization displays a banner at their place of business for one month recognizing them as the Nonprofit of the Month.
